Campitello (Col Rodella) - Friedrich August trail - Passo Duron - Val Duron - Campitello

The Friedrich August Weg, inaugurated on July 30, 1911, is dedicated to King Frederick Augustus III of Saxony, a frequent visitor to the valley. Trail no. 557 connects the Sella pass through the Sela Rodela to the former Seiseralpe refuge.

From Campitello, take the cable car up to Col Rodella and descend on the north side, along trail no. 529, to the nearby Sela Rodela. Then start on trail no. 557, called Friedrich August Weg, named after the Saxony king who was a passionate botanist and frequent visitor to these areas. You walk along an easy trail with minimal elevation changes, crossing the grassy slopes of Sasso di Levante and Sasso Piatto, where you encounter the Friedrich August and Sandro Pertini refuges, then emerge on the wide grassy saddle of Giogo di Fassa at Rifugio Sasso Piatto (2 hours 15 minutes). Here continue on trail no. 594/4, on the Ores de Fascia (Seiser Alm ridge), made up of black volcanic rocks. The trail mostly runs flat, first along the ridge and then on the Val Duron side up to the namesake pass. Some saddles along the way offer superb views also of the opposite side, with Alpe di Siusi and the Odle in the foreground. From Passo Duron you can continue left towards Rifugio Alpe di Tires on a dirt road that constantly climbs, becoming very steep in the last stretch, squeezed between the massive Molignon wall on the left and the sharp yellow-red spires of the Denti di Terrarossa on the right. From Passo Duron, return to Campitello by descending left along the dirt road that winds through the pastures of upper Val Duron and descends the valley floor along trail no. 532 to Rifugio Micheluzzi and, in steep descent, to Campitello.
