Dawn in the Dolomites: Mario Brunello, Polish Cello Quartet

Concert at sunrise

I Suoni delle Dolomiti is a unique event. A music festival at high altitude that brings together musicians from all over the world in the most beautiful mountains of the Alps. The idea behind this initiative is simple: to combine the great passions for music, art and the mountains in a cycle of concerts under the banner of freedom and nature. In addition to the events of Sounds of the Dolomites, which usually take place in the early afternoon, there are some that are particularly evocative because they are offered in the light of the first rays of sunlight. This is the Dawn of the Dolomites, which allows one to appreciate the unique beauty, colours and silences of our mountains at the beginning of the day.

I Suoni delle Dolomiti: special project "Dawn in the Dolomites". Mario Brunello and Polish Cello Quartet. Col Margherita (San Pellegrino Pass - Moena), Friday 1 September at 6.30 a.m.

The magical first light of lawn illuminates the night sky, a lingering moment in time when the rocks and the listeners begin to warm up for another year of Alba delle Dolomiti (Dawn in the Dolomites) on Col Margherita in Val di Fassa. The Polish Cello Quartet - made up of four of the top cellists in the current generation of performers: Tomasz Daroch, Wojciech Fudala, Krzysztof Karpeta and Adam Krzeszowiec - and Mario Brunello's 17th-century MAGGINI cello will work together to seal that profound moment of suspension between darkness and light.

Founded in 2011, the Polish Cello Quartet has won significant awards both for their solo and chamber performances, and has played on the most prestigious stages, collaborating with renowned classical and jazz musicians. In 2019, the quartet received the prestigious Fryderyk Music Award for their second album, which included works by composer Grażyna Bacewicz (Chandos).

During the “symphonic” Alba delle Dolomiti concert programme, extremely rare transcriptions will be performed by the cello ensemble, including Dvorak's cello concerto and the highly renowned Boléro by Ravel.

How to get to Col Margherita: by car to San Pellegrino Pass, ascent by cable car (capacity per hour 1300 people), open for the occasion from 4.30 a.m. to 6.30 a.m. and then on foot (20 mins; difference in altitude 100 m; difficulty E). Return ticket € 13; it can be bought in advance from the ticket office or from the Tourist Office in Moena from mid August.

The concert is free. On the day of the concert, it is possible to go on a paid hike accompanied by the local mountain guides: € 15 adults; free for children up to 8 years. 20% reduction for Trentino Guest Card and Val di Fassa Guest Card holders. Mandatory reservation within 12.00 p.m. of the previous day in the tourist offices of the valley.

We thereby suggest to reach the venue at least one hour before the scheduled time. Adequate high-altitude clothing (namely windbreaker, cap, gloves, boots, and flashlight) recommended.

In case of bad weather, the concert will take place at 5.30 p.m. at Navalge Theatre in Moena. Free tickets distributed at the theatre box office from 3.30 p.m. until sold out.
