6 spring hikes to mountain huts
Hiking and culinary pleasures between magnificent alpine sceneries
“The mountains are calling and I must go”. This famous verse inspires many mountain goers to explore the Italian Alps all year-round but in spring, it’s fair to say, it finds its peak. At this time of the year the mountains are at their best; nature is in full swing and traditional huts reopen.
Above 2000m of altitude, snow has yet to melt and many mountain huts will have to wait for summer before reopening. But a lower altitude it is possible to hike along some paths where the warmer temperatures have opened a passage to some of the refuges.
We share with you six easy hikes to mountain huts open in spring, where you can make the most of the warmer weather, enjoy the traditional dishes and soak up the beautiful views.
Rifugio Monte Calino “San Pietro”
An easy hike from the mediaeval village of Tenno to Rifugio San Pietro, an ideal location for families with small children thanks to the grassy garden and the small animal farm. A sunny terrace provides a panoramic spot for alfresco lunches with local produce and stunning view of Lake Garda.
Rifugio "Val di Fumo"
Bounded by the pristine nature of the Adamello Group, between green pastures and the crystalline water of the River Chiese, Rifugio Val di Fumo is the perfect stopover after a scenic hike through the woods and the lush meadows. Refill with the traditional platter of game and mountain cheese.
Rifugio Bindesi "Pino Prati"
Within short distance from Trento, at the foot of the Marzola, Rifugio Bindesi is the ideal destination for a quick getaway from the city. After a peaceful walk through the oak and ash tree forest, stop at this bolthole to taste a well-assorted menu offering local farm produce matched by specular views of Valle dell’Adige.
Rifugio Altissimo "Damiano Chiesa"
A moderately long walk however, the panorama that awaits you is worth the effort! In the heart of the Baldo mountain range, Rifugio Altissimo Damiano Chiesa is set in a picture-perfect scenery of alpine pastures. The views stretch from the jewel-coloured expanse of Lake Garda to the Altopiano di Brentonico. Make sure to taste the speciality dishes and the traditional aromatic grappa!
Rifugio "La Montanara"
You can enjoy a walk through the woods or hop on your mountain bike to reach the Rifugio La Montanara mountain hut on the highlands of Pradel. The location offers a spectacular view of the Brenta Dolomites and remember, before leaving, make sure to treat yourself to a tasty lunch of polenta cooked slowly over an open fire along with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses.
Rifugio "Monte Lefre"
Surrounded by green woods and comfortably reached by car, Rifugio Monte Lefre is the starting point for many hikes, and for walks in search of mushrooms. Fill your basket and take it to Chef Gabriele, he will turn your “treasure” into delectable dishes. Then, just a few minutes from the mountain hut, don’t miss one of the broadest views over Valsugana from the Cimone panoramic viewpoint.
