Splendid panoramas and delicious food, the perfect way to celebrate spring

SPRING 2020 – Up in the mountains, above 2,000 metres, the snow hasn’t completely melted yet and most mountain huts remain closed until summer. At lower altitudes however, it’s already possible to take advantage of the longer days and warmer temperatures for pleasant walks outdoors in the fresh air.

So here are six easy itineraries and just as many “Rifugi” or mountain huts that are open in spring, where you can relax in the sun and enjoy some tasty mountain cuisine, surrounded by magnificent panoramas.

#1

The Rifugio Pernici, Trentino Lake Garda

In a territory renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in the Ledro Alps, you’ll find the Rifugio Nino Pernici where, thanks to the modest altitude and relatively mild climate of Lake Garda, you can enjoy some fantastic walks through vast flowering meadows in springtime.

#2

The Rifugio Lupi di Toscana, Valle del Chiese

Located in the Valle del Chiese, this small mountain hut is the ideal base for easy and relaxing rambles along the green highlands of Boniprati. For lovers of good food, chef Tullia will be happy to serve you up a plate of “polenta carbonera”, blueberry risotto or “radic da l’ors”, a unique radish that grows here on the slopes of the mountains of western Trentino.

#3

The Rifugio Potzmauer

Once located along the main route that linked the lower Adige valley to the Val di Cembra, the alpine pastures around the Rifugio Potzmauer are today one of the first sights to greet visitors who have come to explore this area of Trentino, that lies off the beaten tourist tracks, and enjoy the woods and views across the Adige valley.

#4

The Rifugio Malga Kraun, Rotaliana plain

Spring is probably the best time to discover the Monte of Mezzocorona, with its meadows and woods of beech and fir trees draped in dazzling green. From late March, after having visited the themed trail “The Magic of the Woods” with its sculptures, you can take a break at the Rifugio Malga Kraun, and try some of the local cuisine based on goulash, pork shins, polenta, barley risotto and delicious homemade desserts.

#5

The Malga Campo mountain farmhouse, Alpe Cimbra

Near the town of Luserna, the Malga Campo farmhouse can be reached in 20 minutes on foot along a forest road. You can also choose to take the “Sentiero dell’Immaginario” (The Trail of Fantasy) that takes about two hours and guarantees great fun for the whole family as you search for the characters of local myths and legends amongst the trees. For a romantic break, it’s also possible to stay in one of the 3 cosy rooms available.

#6

The Rifugio Carlettini, Valsugana

Accessible on foot, by mountain bike or even on horseback, this mountain lodge is located in the heart of the Lagorai chain, one of the wildest areas of Trentino. A unique natural environment dotted with lakes and streams, it could be described as the Highlands of Trentino. The Val Campelle and the Lagorai mountains wait to be discovered.
