Travel tips for a spring time picnic in Trentino

What to eat and where to go to enjoy a beautiful sunny day among the forests, lakes and meadows that look towards the mountains

A great desire to relax, a blanket to spread on the grass and something good to eat. Here are the ingredients for a perfect spring picnic in Trentino. All you have to do is organize the basket, strictly to be filled with the best local products.

In a perfect Trentino picnic basket, handcrafted cured meats such as speck or Trentino Luganega or local cheeses such as Casolet, Vezzena or Primiero cheeses cannot be missing.

Bread also makes a difference. Prefer artisan bakers, among these there are some who package products completely at zero km. And, from the moment you're in the bakery, top off your tasteful shopping with some sweets to take to the mountains, like strudel.

For a light version of the dessert, on the other hand, you cannot miss fresh fruit, such as golden apples from Val di Non or small fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and currants. Also worth trying is the sweetness of dried fruit: delicious apples and plums from Dro.

Where to spread the blanket? Here are the top spots for a wonderful spring picnic!

Four picnic ideas in and around Lake Garda

On the shores of the largest lake in Italy, or on a mountaintop with a view, by the walls of a castle or admiring the turquoise waters of Tenno lake: around Lake Garda there are many ways to enjoy a picnic. This corner of Trentino, thanks to its Mediterranean climate, is the perfect place to roll out the picnic rug and savour the local delicacies: from bruschetta with “carne salada” to simple toasted sandwiches with smoked trout or Arctic char. Enjoy!

Around Lake Lavarone - Alpe Cimbra

Woods, meadows and lots of trails to follow with the whole family. Lake Lavarone is ideal for excursions on foot or by mountain bike, or for placid relaxing afternoons after a tasty snack of Speck and Vezzena cheese, lulled by the cool spring breeze.
You can purchase the cheese directly from Caseificio degli Altipiani e del Vezzena, in Lavarone Cappella. For the cold meats, on the other hand, you can stop in Folgaria, in Via Colpi. There, you will find the Antica Macelleria Cappelletti, where they make speck, but also cooked ham spiced with juniper, game salami, Landjäger salami…

First sunlight at Lake Molveno

In spring, Lake Molveno is tranquil and there are not many people, making it the ideal place for a family picnic. With your kids, you can enjoy the large green meadow on the shore, in addition to moments of relaxation and playtime, beneath the Brenta Dolomites.
To sweeten your picnic, we have chosen the Paganella honey, which you can find at the Apicoltura Castel Belfort in Spormaggiore, possibly combined with local cheeses you can find at El Ciasel: strictly homemade.

Picnic at the Ruffré lakes - Val di Non

The two lakes of the Ruffrè farmsteads, set among the green pastures on the edge of the forest, are perfect for an escape from the city on a cool spring day. You can stop for a joyful picnic or choose to walk towards the Mendola Pass, the towns of Cavareno and Sarnonico, or towards Monte Roèn. If you want to taste some strictly 0 Km bread, we suggest the Dal Gran al Pan bakery in Sarnonico, where they make bread and pastries from wheat, buckwheat, spelt and rye cultivated exclusively by the Pezzini family in the upper Val di Non!

The meadows of Trambileno, fine food and a bit of history

How about having a picnic followed by some sightseeing? The meadows around Trambileno, not far from Rovereto, are the starting point for a number of wonderful walks. From here you can reach the famous hermitage of St. Columbanus or the Pozzacchio fort that played an important role in the First World War. From April 10th you can also stop at the Bosco dei Pini Neri restaurant, order your picnic basket and set off on the discovery of Trentino, both on the road and on the palate.
