Monte Mulat stands at an angle at the head of the ridge that separates, in the north-east, Val di Fiemme from Valle del Travignolo. This positions makes it an observation point par excellence and of great excursionistic importance. Access to the pinnacle is gained through the steep Val di Viezzena valley and then on the long northern backbone that, with gentler slopes, allows for a gradual and less tiring approach. The view of the Lagorai Group will accompany you along the entire ascent.

Turn-by-turn directions

The itinerary starts steeply right from the start up the dirt road that narrows as it ascends.

The road allows you to climb up Valle di Viezzena by walking along the left bank o the Viezzena torrentup until the crossroads at an altitude of 1740 m, where you will find the SAT sign indicating the start of the trail that rises to the left in the direction of the Costa di Viezzena ridge.

The climb along this section remains steep until you reach the meadow of a small mountain house at 1979 m   where you will find the crossroads for Cima Viezzena and for Monte Mulat.

Walk past the front of the small wooden mountain house and proceed east in order to climb back, on the pass, on the ridge of Costa di Viezzena that connects Monte Mulat with Cima Viezzena.

Reach the pass (1976 m) after leaving behind several wooden fountains for grazing livestock.

Close to the hollow that allows you to gain the western side of Costa di Viezzena you will see a small water hole, more in the direction of Val di Fiemme.

Turn sharply left and, over a sequence of gentler slopes alternated with several steeper ones, but never as steep as the road, reach the summit of Monte Mulat (2150 m). The trail remains prevailingly on the highest part of the long ridge.

Retrace your steps back to the departure point.

Getting there

Climb from the town of Predazzo in Val di Fiemme along the road that leads to Passo Rolle.

Once in the Zaluna locality (hotel), prior to Bellamonte, continue until you reach the first bend to the right (SAT sign).

Get off the tarmac road and, after crossing the torrent, continue the climb on the dirt road until you reach the closed to traffic point just a few hundred metres further on.
