Grade: Intermediate/difficult - BSA (Good Alpine Skier) 40°; crampons/ice axe

A marvellous ski-mountaineering trail through a wild, spectacular setting. The first part is easy but long, since it follows the forest road and slopes on the right side of the Rivo delle Stue. The final stretch of the trail, instead, follows the splendid and attractive north-western ridge of Cimon delle Stellune, which requires certain skill and a steady pace with an ice axe and crampons. This trail is therefore ideal for expert ski-mountaineers. The views from the summit are truly amazing.

Safety information

Always check the avalanche bulletin and assess the snowpack in the area.

Special care must be taken along the stretch of the trail that leads to Forcella di Val Moena and along the last slope to the peak, where the stability of the snowpack needs to be carefully assessed.

The long stretch along the ridge is not easy. Watch out for any ledges.

When there is snow cover at low altitudes, you need to start out from Località Zocchi situated along the lower road at an altitude of 1132m.

Equipment

Ice axe, crampons; ski crampons are often useful.

Turn-by-turn directions

Just before Ponte delle Stue (1240m) turn left (south-eastwards) into the forest road that climbs up the right-hand side of the Rio delle Stue, following the signs to Malga Cazzorga - Lago delle Stellune” - SAT trail nr. 318.

Continue along the forest road through the valley, ignoring any forks in the road. Along this route, you will pass: Malga Stue Bassa (alpine dairy at 1458m), Malga Stue Alta (1560m) and Malga Cazzorga (1845m), where the road ends.

From the alpine dairy, continue uphill to the east/north-east, passing a ramp into the woods, without following a set course (approximately along the route of SAT summer trail nr. 318).

This will lead you to the meadows above Malga Stellune (1976m), from where, continuing for a short stretch to the east/north-east, you climb up to the beautiful hollow of Lago delle Stellune (2091m).

When you get to the plateau, go straight on along the valley without going to the lake (which remains slightly lower to the right) to bypass a clearly visible hillock, on the left.

Then turn left (northwards) to climb the steep slope uphill and, changing direction several times you get to the Forcella di Val Moena (alpine pass at 2294m), which closes the western ridge of Cima delle Stellune.

From the alpine pass, continue to the right (north-eastwards – taking care as it is a steep stretch) to flank the lower slopes at the foot of the western side of Cima delle Stellune. This stretch takes you to the start of the north-western ridge of Cima delle Stellune, where the steep slope begins that leads to the summit.   The exact location can be identified by a signpost on a stone, which bears the wording "Sentiero Don Martino Delugan".

Here, put on your crampons, take out your ice axe and fasten your skis to your backpack. Start to climb uphill along an initial steep stretch with a short stretch with a gradient of about 35°-40°.

Following the course of the terrain, continue the uphill climb along the slope that slowly becomes gentler and leads to the plateau at the summit. Put your skis back on again and continue as far as the clearly visible and attractive peak (2605m), along a short steep stretch (30°).

Follow the return route back down the same way, taking great care along the steep slope that requires technical skill (you almost always need to use an ice axe and crampons).

Getting there

Go to Castello di Fiemme along the SS48 main road through the Val di Fiemme or along the SS612 main road from Val di Cembra. Go along the Fiemme valley to Molina di Fiemme, and then continue to Passo del Manghen along the Val Cadino. Continue uphill to the pass until you get to Località Zocchi (forest house on the right - 1132m), where you can park your car. You can often get to Ponte delle Stue by car, (1240m - 1.5 km further ahead), thus avoiding the long initial part of the road. For information about the condition of the road to Passo Manghen, please telephone: +39 0462 341332 (Bar Ristorante Pineta).
