Trio Gardel

An event to bring the profound intertwining of French and Argentinian cultures back to life, in tribute to the memory of one of tango's most sorely missed singers, who owed a part of himself to each country. French by birth but Argentinian by upbringing, culture and language, Carlos Gardel remains one of history’s most prominent figures in the art of pure tango.

His performances of such unforgettable compositions as “Volver” and “Una Cabeza”, recorded during the early years of the last century, still survive to enchant us today. Lionel Suarez on the accordion breathes life back into the notes of these songs, along with the modern-day Trio Gardel, which unites leading musicians of the current French scene to mark the occasion.

On cello, Vincent Segal — who has previously accompanied Ballaké Sissoko on his Dolomites experience in 2016 — will accompany the percussive rhythm set by human time-machine Minino Garay to produce a sophisticated experimental soundscape. With his Argentinian roots, Garay embodies a fusion of French and Argentine identities in a manner equal and opposite to Gardel himself.
