The beauty of this itinerary lies particularly in the amenity of the two points of interest along the route: the majestic "Cascata del Lupo" with a drop of over 30 meters and the site of the Segonzano Pyramids, which contains a geological phenomenon dating back to the glacial thaw. Furthermore, relaxing paths and mule tracks connecting ancient villages, such as the silent hamlet of Quaras, and the hamlets of Varda, Marteri and Piazze, make this itinerary ideal for those who want to enjoy slow tourism and savour the nature and tradition of these places. A large part of the return route follows the famous European path E5, undertaken every year by thousands of walkers willing to retrace this historic route, departing mainly from Germany and culminating in Venice. In spite of its modest length, thanks to the moderate altitude difference, the walkability of the paths and the natural points of interest, the route is suitable for all walkers, even families with children.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the church in Piazze, follow the asphalt road in a northerly direction for about 350 metres to the start of the SAT path E 406, which leads to the Cascata del Lupo waterfall. After a short stretch on grassland, the path descends steeply but safely through deciduous woodland until it reaches the valley floor. The turnoff to the waterfall is well marked on the right, and after a few dozen steps you reach a lay-by for safe observation of the impressive waterfall. After a few minutes on a dirt road, you reach the Val Regnana asphalt road, corresponding to SAT path E 406. After about 3 km downhill, the famous site of the Segonzano Pyramids is reached. Climbing along the path, which is steep in places, it is possible to get a close-up view of the earth pyramids formed by the erosion of fluvio-glacial terrain, with stops at very atmospheric observation points, and the possibility of making use of picnic areas dotted along the way. This path ends on an asphalted forest road, which cuts across the Dosso di Segonzano hillside, marked as European Path E5. The road, slightly uphill, is pleasant and leads to the village of Quàras, silently nestled in a cosy mid-mountain clearing. At Quàras, rejoin European Path E5 (coinciding with the start of SAT path E406B) and follow the ancient mule track bordered by porphyritic dry stone walls. Having passed the Rio Val Bruta valley, climb up to the dirt road towards Bedollo. 250 metres before the village, cut down towards the valley, still following path E5-406B, to the houses of the Marteri locality. The route ends with the pleasant crossing of Stramaiolo, Castellani and Varda, which offer some providential fountains.
