SAT / E297 - Forte Belvedere Gschwent - Pedemonte
Splendid route that descends from Forte Belvedere, museum of the fortified line of the Alpe Cimbra, along the dirt road between ledges and rock jumps overlooking the underlying Val d'Astico. Combined with the CAI 597 trail, it leads down to the valley floor at Pedemonte.
After crossing the gorge moat of Forte Belvedere Gschwent, upon reaching the panoramic point beside the square, with a view of Lusèrna and the Val d'Astico, we descend alongside the fort towards the Fortino, a small road traced by the Austrians in the early 1900s that gradually descends along the Spileck ridge. Originally called Neuestrasse now Strada Nuova. The road, carved into the rock and supported in many points by high stone walls, crosses the grooves of Val del Giarón and Valle Cogoletti. With a spectacular view of the valley floor and the opposite Spitz Tonezza, we bypass Dosso della Spia and arrive at loc. Le Tabelle where, on the left, a variant splits for Eck delle Albarèle, a route that allows connection to the CAI 598 trail descending to the bottom of Valle del Rio Torto. The road now circles the hill in front and we leave it to descend along a path surrounded by woods, steep but well marked, called Sentiero di Fondo Grande, which passes beside the ruins of Baito Arcangelin and descends with tight turns to the small clearing of Fondo Piccolo, near the rocky edge overlooking the valley. The trail now traverses towards the head of Valle del Rio Torto and descends to the locality La Crosetta from where it continues with CAI 597 markings towards Brancafòra di Pedemonte. From La Crosetta, it takes just over half an hour to reach the valley floor.
