From Pozza to the waterfalls in Val San Nicolò

A great classic for MTB enthusiasts: steady climbs, varied terrain, and postcard alpine scenery, up to the spectacular waterfalls of the San Nicolò stream.

Starting from the Piaza de Comun of Pozza along Strada de Meida, which then becomes Strada Ruf de Ruacia, reach the bridge (Pont de Garneté), near the Soldanella Restaurant. Just before the bridge, on the right, take the dirt road ascending the left side of the stream, initially gentle, becoming progressively steeper with a short series of hairpin bends. The path then flattens out connecting with the road of Val San Nicolò, just below Malga al Crocifisso. At the chapel, keep left and continue pedaling on asphalt: the route alternates smooth stretches with long climbs, until exiting the forest at locality Saùch. Descend right into a wide clearing and take the dirt road "dei Rusci", which winds through the forest along the left side of the stream. The route varies but is never too challenging. At the fork, follow the path no. 641 for a few meters, then turn left on a trail that first crosses the forest and then opens onto the pastures of upper Val San Nicolò. The view ranges over the crests of Costabella with Cima Uomo, pointed Col Ombert and, downhill, the imposing walls of Maerins, with Catinaccio closing the panorama. You reconnect to the main dirt road: a final steep paved section leads to Baita alle Cascate, behind which flow the suggestive waterfalls originating from the San Nicolò stream. It is the perfect place for a refreshing break and some photos. For the return, follow the dirt road that from Baita Ciampiè gradually becomes asphalt. Among scattered huts and barns in the pastures, the alpine soul of the valley still lives on, surviving the difficult years of the Great War.
Now a long and relaxing descent awaits you down to Pozza. Enjoy it all.
