The Gallerie di Piedicastello in Trento, a unique and unrepeatable experience (free admission)
ATTENTION: The opening of cultural and tourist sites, access to them, to public transport and to the services described in these pages is governed by the containment measures put in place by the government authorities and the Autonomous Province of Trento to deal with the COVID-19 health emergency. The rules may vary over time and provide for the application of different security measures — from closure, to social distancing, to the mandatory use of personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks.
We therefore ask you to contact the service managers directly for updated information on how to gain access.
In 2007 the two tunnels crossing the Piedicastello district were closed to traffic and replaced by new ones. Instead of being abandoned, the old tunnels now host an extraordinary environment.
The story of the Gallerie di Piedicastello, a section of Fondazione Museo storico del Trentino (Trentino Historical Museum Foundation) went all around the world. Not least because it is not a “museum” that was created here, but a living exhibition with lots of active participation.
In the Galleria nera [Black Gallery] and Galleria bianca [White Gallery] an open and innovative cultural offer is being experimented on the history and memory of the city of Trento, of Trentino and of the regional area corresponding to historical Tyrol.
The Galleries are located in the Piedicastello district, underneath Doss Trento. They can be reached in just a few minutes’ walk from the old town, the train station and the Muse.
