Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme
1000 years full of hystory and proud indepedence
Original documents and age-old copies of the first bylaws and regulations governing the valley bear witness to the daily life and tools of another age. This is how the journey into the history of Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme Museum and Picture Gallery begins. Here, visitors can admire numerous canvasses of what was probably Trentino's only school in terms of art - the Fiemme School. The museum, which is located in the historical centre of Cavalese, also hosts Privilegio Enriciano parchment, in which Bishop Enrico III confirmed the rights and autonomy of the Comunità. The coat of arms of the Comunità - featuring six white bands covered by a cross - was granted by Bishop Lodovico Madruzzo in 1588, and is clearly visible on the frescoed façade of the building.
Located on the second floor of Palazzo Storico della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, the picture gallery is housed in the Bishop's apartments, whose rooms are decorated with prized frescoes and wooden ceilings. Nowadays, Magnifica Comunità is still entrusted with the wise management of all communal land properties, including mountains, meadows and forests, as well as with the planning of timber-cutting, any reforesting interventions, and looking after the state of forest roads.
Technology and design are at the disposal of a 900-year long history: visitors can feel it while they walk through the picture gallery, the “aula del consesso”, the prisons, the media rooms and the spaces devoted to the consultation of the ancient manuscripts.
Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme is an elegant and dynamic museum, also thanks to an excellent work of renovation which lasted 7 years. In 2012 the restoration was finally completed and the building was given back to the citizens of Val di Fiemme as a magnificent temple of culture.
