La Panarotta and Lagorai Massif are located at just a few kilometres from Levico Terme and Lake Caldonazzo. During World War I, the area was crossed by the Austro-Hungarian front, as testified by the string of fortifications in the entire range. Dotted with the typical mountain farmhouses called "masi", the area is the gateway to the Lagorai-Cima d'Asta range, one of the largest, most evocative and least known mountain ranges of the Eastern Alps.
50 km long Lagorai-Cima d'Asta range features Permian quartz porphyry and its highest peak is Cima di Cece, at 2,754 m a.s.l. Wild and rugged, this mountain range conceals numerous traces of ancient anthropization by shepherds. Quarternary glaciations have shaped the mountains, and lead to over 100 glacial lakes, at about 2,000 m a.s.l., as well as torrents. Due to scanty human settlements, the local flora and fauna have been excellently kept. Besides numerous species of small wildlife, the area hosts the most famous mammals of the Alps, such as chamois, roe deer, red deer, marmots, and birds, including some pairs of golden eagles, peregrines, capercaillies and black grouse.
