Roccolo del Sauch
Roccolo del Sauch is a marvellous tree sculpture currently used for bird-watching
Accessible from Giovo, the so-called roccolo del Sauch is an interesting plant attraction, a marvellous tree sculpture featuring a double row of trees and plants pruned in rounded shapes, which was once used for hunting purposes and has now been transformed into a bird-watching observatory to study birds' migratory routes. Study activities are carried out by the Tridentino Museum of Natural Science, in collaboration with Trentino bases located the Bocca del Caset pass in Val di Ledro and the Brocon pass in Tesino.
The word "roccolo" refers to an ancient bird-catching method consisting of a beech and fir tree piece properly made by interweaving and pruning trees into a tunnel and by leaving a grassy space in the middle. When a large number of birds had gathered on the grassy space in the middle of the tunnel, and after the bird-hunter had whistled, a scarecrow would be tossed about from a hut. Birds would then fly straight into an almost invisible net stretched between the arches of the tunnel.
