Paolo Fresu Trio
Maybe it’s because he discovered music through his village band; maybe it’s because he has collaborated with a dizzying array of artists over the years. Either way, Paolo Fresu is one of those musicians who truly transcends musical genres.
Like other international music greats (Uri Caine and Dave Douglas spring to mind), he has transformed jazz into a genuine journey through the most beguiling, unexpected soundscapes. Sounds of the Dolomites devotees know it well. They’ve seen him join other jazz players, classical musicians and orchestras with an enduring passion for rediscovering folk music. And they’ve heard him improvise with three alphorn players in a chance encounter on a mountain path.
This time, the talented Sardinian jazzman has a fresh musical adventure for us, alongside long-time travelling companions Dino Rubino (piano and flugelhorn) and Marco Bardoscia (double bass). This sophisticated three-voice interplay has real emotional and intellectual vim, with Fresu’s warm, rich sound and lively creative mind, Bardoscia’s potent, compelling basslines, and Rubino’s vibrant, elegant virtuosity.
At their concert on 1 September at Camp Centener in the Brenta Dolomites, they’ll be reprising some tunes from their project from a few years back celebrating the subtle genius of American jazz singer and trumpet legend Chet Baker. The gig is sure to feature creative improv aplenty and a lively dialogue with the landscape, its echoing hollows and the breeze.
