It’s time to stretch your legs

You’ve probably noticed: our lakes are set within some staggeringly beautiful landscapes. The best way to explore them is on foot

In Trentino, every lake comes with its own web of hiking trails.

Some are soothing walks along the shoreline. Others lead into the mountains, and will lose you in a world of fragrant forests and soaring crags.
Here, we’ve picked eight of the best – from easy strolls to lung-busting climbs.

Hugging Lake Garda’s shoreline

An easy two-hour walk from Riva del Garda, this route follows the old Ponale road, through a symphony of buzzing cicadas, and throws out stunning views at every turn.

A view of the Brenta Dolomites

A gentle stroll from the town of Molveno takes you along the eastern shore of its lake, and is a good option for families. The views up to the Brenta Dolomites are really gorgeous.

The bronze-age lake

On the shore of Lake Ledro archaeologists discovered an entire village of bronze-age houses, built on stilts. The museum commemorating them provides a fascinating interlude on an easy-going tour of the lake.

Tour of Lake Tovel

This walk along Lake Tovel shores is a perfect opportunity to relax, lulled by the rhythmic sound of the water as it gently splashes onto the lake’s ivory coloured beaches. The ideal destination for leaf peeping during the fall...

The Croz dell’Altissimo

A strenuous circuit from Molveno brings you close to the Brenta Dolomites. Here, beneath sheer walls of ancient coral, you’ll find a cute little rifugio for lunch – and a chance to put your feet up before you drop back down to the lake.

The battlefield on Monte Altissimo

This moderate walk explores the massif above Lake Garda, and for much of its length serves up a vast panorama of lakes and mountains. Added interest comes from the extensive network of First World War trenches and forts.

A fort carved from a mountain

In the First World War, the Austrians carved out a mountain crag at Piz di Levico, and turned it into a fort. This moderate walk explores the landscape they defended, and serves up staggering views of the Valsugana from the summit.

Monte Brione Fortresses

Breathtaking views on Lake Garda in this interesting and easy walk on Monte Brione, just above Riva del Garda. Discover the World War I fortresses joining one of the guided tour organised by the local tourist office (June 23 -September 29 every thursday / October 2 to 30 every sunday)
