"What kind of person are you willing to become in order to survive?". It’s the question you will ask yourself after watching the Swedish original TV series ‘Sanctuary’, filmed in various locations in Trentino, from the Valsugana to the Val di Fassa, starring an excellent cast, including Matthew Modine, known from Kubrik's Full Metal Jacket and the most recent Stranger Things series, who in Sanctuary plays the role of Dr. Fischer.

A psychological thriller that delves into the themes of survival, identity, trust and betrayal, in a plot full of twists. The series follows the story of the protagonist, Helena Brant, as she comes to enter the Sanctuary, a secluded resort in the Italian Alps, to visit her estranged twin sister Siri. Grand Hotel Imperial and Spa Park, Levico Terme

The Spa Park was built at the beginning of the 20th century, coinciding with the opening of the Valsugana railway which linked various centres in the valley with the small town of Levico, renowned for its iron-rich thermal water. Connected to the train station thanks to a boulevard lined with century-old beech trees, the park was designed to be an exclusive place for nobles and prominent figures from the old continent to find peace and rest.

The park is also home to the Grand Hotel Imperial, the mysterious Sanctuary in the Swedish original TV series. Opened in the 1900s, over the years the Grand Hotel has been renovated multiple times. While parts have been rebuilt and expanded, the building maintains its original atmosphere and style.

Today, the Park hosts many events and activities: guided tours, summer music matinées, Christmas markets, flower shows, nature workshops for schools and much more.

Mount Mezzocorona cable car (access to the Sanctuary)

In the series, the access to the Sanctuary is granted by a cable car ride. In actual fact, the facility is located on Mount Mezzocorona and takes passengers to the top of the mountain covering 622m in altitude in just 3 minutes. At the top you will find restaurants, access to several hiking trails overlooking the Adige Valley and a panoramic lookout point from a suspended terrace.

Those looking for more adventure can attempt the Burrone Giovannelli via ferrata that winds through beautiful gorges, a towering waterfall with steep stairs, suspended bridges and some easier rock passages.

Those who prefer to walk and avoid the via ferrata, can take the easy route along the SAT path, without missing the breathtaking views.

Val di Fassa - Val San Nicol

La Val San Nicolò

While in reality the Grand Hotel - and therefore the Sanctuary - are located in the Spa Park in Levico, the main setting of the TV series is the scenic Val San Nicolò with its vast meadows dotted with barns.

To the south, the valley is surrounded by the majestic mountains of Monzoni and Costabella, and to the north by the Buffaure-Colac. The highest point is Cima Uomo at 3010m of altitude. The valley is a popular destination amongst climbers, trekkers and mountain lovers thanks to the many itineraries and green mobility facilities.

Lake San Pellegrino

A small stretch of water - one of the 300 lakes in Trentino - with easy access from the namesake pass, overlooked by Col Margherita and fed by several streams flowing from the nearby mountains. On clear days, its limpid water creates mirror-like reflections of the Dolomites.

An easy path runs around the entire lake, with footbridges and walkways, leading to a secluded picnic area. There are numerous hiking routes starting from the pass and the lake to the Costabella and Monzoni mountains, with access to both the Col Margherita and the Cima Bocche, which can also be reached via ski lifts. The area also offers a good selection of hotels and excellent restaurants.
