Trento, city of art, lakes and mountains

Three different ways to discover the city in autumn

There is one detail that reveals exactly what Trento is all about. It's a detail that you can notice when looking at the landscape from a special viewpoint in the garden of Palazzo delle Albere, just a stone's throw from the city centre. It reveals a great deal about this city and its soul.

As with art masterpieces, you have to take a few steps back in order to fully appreciate them. That is why, before you get here, you should leave the city centre and explore the areas around Trento. You will discover a city of ancient palazzi and art treasures, but also of lakes and mountains.

What to do in and around Trento in autumn

The first stop: on the mountain of Trento

Monte Bondone is 'Trento’s Alp'. This is where Trento's children take their first outings and learn to ski. The mountain is part of the city, its profile standing out against the urban landscape.

Your journey begins up here, where several hiking trails start. The most famous—and tiring—is the one that runs along the Tre Cime del Bondone ('Three Peaks of Bondone').  This is a loop trail with some rather challenging sections.

A more relaxing option is a stroll to the Viote Alpine Botanical Gardens, one of the largest botanical gardens in the Alps.

Discover the world of plants by following the paths, take a stroll across the small wooden bridge that offers a view of the pond, and pause at the viewpoint to identify the mountain peaks. There is also an Alpine Playground for children right next door. It's the ideal place to stop for a picnic.

The second stop: the lakes of the Piné Plateau

The second stage of your discovery tour of Trento takes you less than half an hour's drive from the city to the Piné Plateau. Up here, you can travel 200 km of paths and dirt roads by mountain bike.

The setting is that of Lake Serraia and Lake Piazze, two Alpine water bodies that are joined by a pleasant walk.

Fancy a treat? At the Agrigelateria La Cà sul Lago, an ice cream parlour which uses fruit picked directly from its own greenhouse to make ice cream, you can also find Trentino natural yoghurt, milkshakes and smoothies. Open until September 15th.

The third stop: Trento

Thanks to the Bicipolitana routes, discovering Trento on two wheels is easier than ever, so stay on your saddle. The final leg of this journey will lead you to your promised destination: the garden of Palazzo delle Albere.

To reach it, you must ride along a long avenue once travelled by the carriages of the prince-bishops, who would travel from the city centre to the palace in the summer in search of refreshment. At the end of the avenue, a short subway leads you to the garden.

You've finally arrived! The MUSE, with its unmistakable design by Renzo Piano, is on your right. In front of you is the Palazzo delle Albere, a magnificent Renaissance fortress villa, with the mountains behind it.

If you look closely among the rocks and vegetation, you will see a rushing waterfall which plunges from Sardagna Hill and seems like it wants to enter the town.

This is nature in all its vitality breaking through the beauty created by humans to remind us that Trento is not only a city of ancient buildings and art treasures, but also of lakes and mountains. It is unique—and therefore wonderful.

Taste

After a day of walking and museums, you deserve an aperitivo. If you want to go classic, you can stop in Piazza Duomo, where the elegant Scrigno del Duomo stands out. Or you can breathe in the bohemian atmosphere of La Vie en Rose or the rustic atmosphere of the Quinta del Sordo. There are quite a few great places to have an aperitivo .  What to order? A Trentodoc, of course!

Trento is home of the famous Ferrari wine cellars, ambassadors of Trentodoc in the world. Don’t miss the opportunity of a visit to a wine cellar with wine tasting. To make this experience unforgettable, stop for dinner at the Ristorante Locanda Margon, to savour chef Edoardo Fumagalli’s Michelin-starred cuisine.

Speaking of Trentodoc, we look forward to seeing you in Trento from 26 to 28 September 2025 for the third edition of the Trentodoc Festival a festival with a rich calendar of events, including guided tastings, DJ sets and visits to the wine cellars that produce this prized classic method sparkling wine.

Still on the subject of events, don’t miss Autumnus, from 9 to 19 October 2025. Ten days in which the piazze and streets will be packed with stands displaying the excellence of Trentino food and wine, along with tastings, workshops, and show cooking.

Also, check out the events at Palazzo Roccabruna, provincial Enoteca of Trentino, which organises meetings with winemakers and tastings of Trentino’s most representative types of wine. The ideal place to learn about Trentino’s wine culture.

If the aperitivo has given you an appetite, that means it’s time for dinner, also because here in Trento we dine rather early. A stone’s throw from the cathedral is the osteria Le Due Spade, an elegant stube that has been open since the time of the Council of Trent to welcome council members, pilgrims, notables and travellers. Or you can stop in the quiet piazzetta Lunelli and try the cuisine of the Osteria Il Cappello. There is an abundance of proposals, even moving up into the hills. We recommend you take a look at the selection of restaurants in Trento
