Dürer. Mater et melancholia

From 7 December, at the Mart Museum the Madonna and Child and a series of engravings by Albrecht Dürer

WINTER 2023 – 2024 From 7 December 2023 until 3 March 2024 the rooms of the Mart, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, will host the Dürer. Mater et melancholia exhibition, born of an idea by Vittorio Sgarbi, edited by Daniela Ferrari and Stefano Roffi.

The exhibition showcases a few absolute masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, such as the famous Madonna and Child, painted at the end of the 15th century during one of the artist’s well-known training trips to Italy, and a series of engravings, among which stands out Melencolia I, the best known among the engravings of the German master.

The exhibition itinerary hinges around these universal works by the ‘Master of Nuremberg’, selected to represent the recurring themes of motherhood and melancholy. It is divided into five sections - Maternity, Melancholy, Melancholies of the room and departure, Melancholies of the artist and Works in black - and consists of around 70 works from private and public collections, such as the Segantini Museum in Saint Moritz, the Engraving Gallery in Brescia, the Buonconsiglio Castle in Trento, the UniCredit collection, the Morandi Museum in Bologna and the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan.

The works of the “Master of Nuremberg” stand alongside those of great artists of the 20th century such as Boccioni, Casorati, de Chirico, Fontana, Segantini, Severini, Sironi and Wildt. A journey through time that flows along two parallel thematic tracks: motherhood and melancholy.

The treasures of the Exhibition

In addition to the possibility of admiring Dürer’s masterpieces, exceptionally lent by the Magnani Rocca Foundation and displayed alongside real milestones in the history of Italian art, visitors can also admire two precious engravings by Giorgio Morandi: Still Life with Bread and Lemon realised in 1921 and Large Dark Still Life in 1934

The exhibition also showcases another extraordinary work: Self-Portrait with Brother by Giorgio de Chirico, realised in 1924. The work, which has not been exhibited to the public for decades, has recently become part of the Mart Collections.
