After setting off in Vezzano, descend via Fraveggio and Padergnone to Lago di Toblino until you reach the eponymous castle, which sits enthroned on a rocky promontory in the lake. A steep climb then begins up a tarmacked minor road (closed to traffic) to Ranzo, a somewhat remote village, but all the better for it. A spectacular road carved through the rock takes you back to the valley floor and you then head north-east through the villages of Lon, Ciago and Covelo until you reach Monte Terlago, changing several times between road, forest track and simple trail. The route becomes a bit more difficult shortly before the idyllically situated Lago di Lamar and shortly before the village of Terlago. After Lago di Terlago, you then continue along a cycle path back to the starting point in Vezzano.

    Author’s recommendation

Make sure to appreciate the view on the road between Ranzo and Lon, where you will be able to see Lake Toblino, with its charming castle, Lake Cavedine and Lake Garda.

    • Endurance: combined effect of length, uphill and downhill
    • Wilderness: amount of planning required based on mobile phone reception, rescue options, water supply and wildlife
    • Exposure: consequences of a fall

    Equipment

Riding your bike requires specific clothing and equipment, even for relatively short and easy trips. It is always better to be prepared… e.g. for bad weather or a sudden drop in your energy levels. The unexpected things are part of the fun!

Remember to thoroughly evaluate the type of route you plan on doing, the locations you intend to cross and the current season. Has it been raining? Attention: The paths may be slippery and require more caution.

What do I need to bring on my bike tour?

    • Plenty of snacks (for example, dried fruit or energy bars)
    • Waterproof / Windproof jacket
    • A spare top / spare socks (Descending in a sweaty garment, will make you cold).
    • Suncream
    • Sunglasses
    • Bike gloves/mitts

    • Bike lights: best placed on your helmet or handlebars. (It is always best to be prepared)
