13 kilometres of pure adrenaline. That’s how you could define the climb that from Bolognano, a hamlet of Arco, leads to Monte Velo Santa Barbara. It is one of the most popular climbs in Alto Garda, the upper Lake Garda area.

Safety information

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Turn-by-turn directions

A little less than 13 kilometres that are sure to give you incredible thrills. However, you need to have trained hard to take on this climb, or remember to take healthy breaks for a drink and snack. Cadel Ewans knows that well. During the Giro d’Italia 2002, the Australian champion forgot to eat on this climb and ended up feeling starved in the final stretch of the stage, which cost him the pink jersey.

The road goes straight uphill right from the start. The slopes are softened by the passage at midpoint through the picturesque village of Bolognano. But just outside the town, the chain begins to get hard and the strain takes its toll. The road climbs relentlessly with the road-posts indicating stretches with a 15 percent slope. After about 5 km, on the left you’ll notice the capital dedicated to Salve Regina. On the right, the eye gazes across an incredible landscape, with Lake Garda that appears as an incredibly vast stretch of water.

The road climbs up again, but without the strenuous jolts of the first kilometres. The last stretch is more gentle. You enter the woods and the fresh air is a soothing balm for the last efforts. On the pass, under the slopes of Mount Stivo, a fountain indicates that the climb is over and that you can quench your thirst. Here the bicycle is a Queen not only on the road, but also in a myriad of trails, a true biker’s paradise.
