Giant Firs Trail

<p>The Giant Firs Trail was created between 2016 and 2018 thanks to the initiative of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park to promote its forest heritage. With over 250,000 cubic meters of timber, of which about 3,500 are harvested each year, the Val Noana forest consists mainly of white firs, red firs, and beeches.</p>

<p>The hike starts from the Casina Forestale (in the locality of Valpiana), near which, right at the start of the two variants, stands a beautiful wooden sculpture of a centuries-old fir by Giuseppe Zeni called el Boschiér (the woodcutter). The walk proceeds gently uphill through the forest, crossing the Carbonère Valley and ascending the ridge of Col della Parrocchia. It then crosses the Val dei Pònti to reach the Pósa de l’Ors (bear's pool), a small water pool in the middle of the forest which, in its name, perhaps preserves the presence of bears in these woods until the mid-1800s.</p> <p>Soon after passing the Pósa de l’Ors, continue climbing towards Malga Val Stúa di Sopra, also called Malga Costón. The large pasture of the malga, built at the foot of Monte Pavione, is the highest and most panoramic point of the route (note that the panoramic point is located above the malga, in the middle of the meadow). From the viewpoint, with an explanatory sign, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of the Pale di San Martino, Lagorai, and the Feltrine Peaks.</p> <p>From the malga, the walk continues downhill, crossing the Boàl dei Canalíni and returning to the Casina Forestale via the Baracca Piansignór, continuing parallel but lower than the first part of the hike.</p>
