#16) From Rovereto to the Coni Zugna Refuge

Not too long but intense stage, with an important climb: from the Adige plain we climb Monte Zugna, discovering the remains of important military works. A visit to the Bell of the Fallen is unmissable and, not far away, the Ossuary.

From Rovereto, where it is a must to get lost among the ancient medieval walls, the rich Baroque palaces and the many cultural attractions of the center (Mart and the War Museum among others), we set off towards the mountain next to the city, Monte Zugna, on whose slopes you almost immediately encounter two important legacies of the Great War, whose visit is almost obligatory if you are walking the Peace Trail, for an even deeper context: the Bell of the Fallen “Maria Dolens” - a commemorative bell for the fallen located on the Miravalle Hill, made with bronze from the cannons of the nations that took part in the conflict, whose daily peals recall that tragic event - and the Military Ossuary of Castel Dante - a funerary monument located on the summit of Castel Dante Hill, where the remains of the fallen previously buried in the numerous military cemeteries of the surrounding areas rest.

Continuing further we reach the site of the Damiano Chiesa Cave, where the irredentist from Rovereto was captured on 17 May 1916. Beyond the cave towards the valley, you can visit some slabs of rock where large dinosaur footprints remain impressed, while further along the route you encounter the Trincerone, the scene of historic Italian resistance. Finally, you arrive at the Coni Zugna Refuge, where, by reservation, you can visit the Astronomical Observatory.
