Trentino can be also explored on skis. Our winter itinerary both starts and finishes in Trento (of course, you’ll have to get to Trento first) and can last for one or more days, depending on your requirements.
There are only a few of basic rules that must be followed: bring warm clothing, be ready for adventure and have the legs to ski down 150 kilometres of slopes, all connected thanks to 62 ski lift facilities.
The vast ski area of Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta Val di Sole Val Rendena, the largest in Trentino, starts at Folgarida-Marilleva and takes you as far as Pinzolo passing through Madonna di Campiglio, with a single ski pass.
So here are our suggestions for a fun skiing itinerary.
From Trento to Folgarida-Marilleva
You can depart from Trento in the early morning. Remember that you can leave your car at home and hop on the early 6.04 train that will take you to Mezzana, in the Val di Sole, just as the ski lifts open (at 8am).
Get off the Dolomiti Express train at the Daolasa Commezzadura stop and catch the 8-seater cable car directly from the station. This “road-rail-cable” service is unique in Italy. The lift will take you, in just a few short minutes, to an altitude of 2,000 metres and the much anticipated ski slopes. Here, if you’re a skilled skier and looking for some thrills, make sure you try the new “Little Grizzly” slope.
At the end of the day or if you need a rest, sit back and relax at the Rifugio Orso Bruno (Brown Bear Mountain Hut) or take a dip in the steaming waters of the whirlpool bathtub and soak up a spectacular sunset across the Brenta Dolomites.
From Folgarida to Madonna di Campiglio
Get back on the slopes and hop on the ski lift that connects you directly to the Madonna di Campiglio ski area. Here, besides the renowned “3Tre” slope, the legendary piste of the World Cup circuit, you must also try the Direttissima dello Spinale (Schumacher Streif): here the technical difficulty of the slope goes hand in hand with the panorama! This is an electrifying black slope with its numerous snow banks and sudden changes in gradient.
Now move on to Grostè and treat yourself to the spa at the Stoppani Mountain Hut with its outdoor Jacuzzi tub and saunas on the terrace, and have a toast with a glass of spumante in the crisp mountain air. What else could you want? Now you might be feeling hungry so for an afternoon snack ski down as far as the 5 Laghi mountain hut and treat yourself to a sweet break with a slice of Signora Natalia’s apple pie (unforgettable vista included), some say it’s the best in the area!
And on a final note here’s a tip for a truly unique experience: book at the “Canalone Miramonti” slope (the last stretch of the 3Tre piste) for an unforgettable skiing descent under the stars.
From Madonna di Campiglio to Trento, passing through Pinzolo
End your ski tour in style by taking the Pinzolo Campiglio Express cable car (the most panoramic in Trentino), that will take you to the very heart of the Pinzolo ski resort in just 16 minutes.
Here you can take on the longest ski slope in the entire ski area and with the greatest drop in altitude (1,284 metres): the Dolomitica which also offers a maximum gradient of over 70%. The Tulot slope has nothing to be ashamed of however with its mix of technical difficulties and gradients that make it one of the most compelling slopes in Trentino.
For food and refreshments we suggest you stop at the Prà Rodont mountain hut where you’ll be welcomed by the pleasant aromas of the traditional local cuisine.
Now, unfortunately, the tour has come to an end and it’s time to get back home. If you took the train up you can get back to Trento with the public bus service, tickets can be bought directly onboard.
