Italian Long and Relay Orienteering Championships
In the beautiful setting of the San Pellegrino Pass, a weekend of running, endurance and intelligence to cross the finish line without getting lost
Map, compass and "lanterns" in the woods and on the paths of the San Pellegrino Pass, in the municipality of Moena. On 21 and 22 September, the Italian Long and Relay Orienteering Championships will be staged, open to both athletes and amateurs between the ages of 12 and 75. There are hundreds and hundreds of registered athletes from almost all regions of Italy with some even from beyond the border. What is orienteering? It is a discipline that was born at the turn of the 19th and 20th century in Scandinavia and quickly spread throughout the world. Running first of all, but not only: the imperative to win is knowing how to orienteer. The race thus becomes a game of skill that combines finding the best route to get to the "lanterns", the checkpoints, as quickly as possible. For this reason, the athletes arrive at the race prepared, after a careful study of the territory, using old maps and street views.
The event is organised by the amateur sports association G.S. Pavione from Imèr-Primiero, led by Adriano Bettega, which has a staff of around forty people. On Saturday the teams, consisting of three athletes, including at least one woman, will compete in the relay race. At the start, the first fractionists of each team will throw themselves onto the course and will have to close their part of the race to pass the baton to their companion. Sunday is the turn of the long race, which is also valid for the international Wre score. Here, the lanterns will be quite far apart, the courses even more challenging and physical endurance will make the difference. A spectacle not to be missed for fans of outdoor sports.
