10 things to do in winter in San Martino di Castrozza

Holiday in a World Heritage site with a view of the Pale

From the town of San Martino di Castrozza, which is located at 1,450 meters asl, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Pale di San Martino - UNESCO Heritage site. When you arrive at the town, you need only look at peaks like Cimon della Pala or vertical cliff walls like Sass Maor, to understand why the writer Dino Buzzati fell in love with these mountains.

In winter, San Martino di Castrozza is a favourite destination for those who love to ski. In fact it is part of the Dolomiti Superski ski area with slopes for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snow parks. There are plenty of local schools with more than 100 qualified instructors for beginners and children and snow parks for young children.

If you don't ski, take the opportunity to relax in the natural beauty of the Paneveggio Nature Park. Here, among dense fir woods, you can go for a walk in the snow or a snowshoe hike, even at night, in the moonlight. Or you can relax on the sunny chalet terraces let yourself be enveloped by the warm embrace of the wellness centres in the town’s hotels.

But first things first, here is a list of the 10 things you must to do in winter in San Martino di Castrozza!

#1

Skiing at one of the most famous ski resorts in the world

San Martino di Castrozza is part of the Dolomiti Superski resort, the largest in Italy, which connects 12 ski resorts, 450 ski lifts, 1,200 kilometres of slopes with a single ski pass.

#2

Skiing across from the Pale di San Martino

The San Martino di Castrozza Passo Rolle ski resort, within the Dolomiti Super Ski resort, offers you 60 km of slopes inside the San Martino Paneveggio Pale Nature Park, in an exceptional natural setting like the one found in Pale di San Martino.

#3

Do stunts at Rolle Railz Park

If you prefer snowboarding to downhill skiing, then look for the Rolle Railz Park directly on the slopes of Passo Rolle, 9 kilometres from San Martino di Castrozza. With its 5 lifts, it has 15 kilometres of slopes and a freestyle area completely marked of by fences.

#4

Fun in the snow

Something special for the little ones! In San Martino di Castrozza you will find Nasse Park, the snow park run by the Prà delle Nasse school. It has a first steps area with a moving walkway, a slope for sledges and bobsleighs, and a snow-tubing slope to slide down on inner tubes.

#5

Cross-country skiing at Lake Calaita

If cross-country skiing is your thing, then we recommend the ski runs at the Lake Calaita Country skiing centre, that make their way around Lake Calaita, in the Valle del Vanoi. Eight km of runs with a view of Cimon della Pala with various rings, which run on flat meadows or on slopes with slight gradients.

#6

Snowshoeing in Val Venegia

If you are in San Martino di Castrozza, Val Venegia is yours to discover. The trail we recommend starts in the woods and then opens onto Cimon della Pala and Mulaz, up to the iconic Baita Segantini, famous for the incredible view on the Pale di San Martino that it has for its visitors. The difficulty of the trail is intermediate, but it is extraordinarily beautiful.

#7

See the deer in Paneveggio Park

The Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park is one of the areas in Trentino with the largest concentration of ungulates. You can even see the deer up close, all you have to do is go to the large wildlife area of the Park’s Visitor Centre.

#8

Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Not far from San Martino di Castrozza, there is the lovely, welcoming Mezzano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In its narrow streets and among its wooden houses, you can see the permanent exhibition Cataste & Canzèi, piles of wood that have been transformed into works of art and then stop at the small Tabià del Rico museum, which tells the story of life in the town.

#9

Tasting the Tosèla del Primiero

Cheese making is an art form here. There are the local aged cheeses, the Trentino Grana, the Botìro di Primiero di Malga, which is a Slow Food Presidium butter. And then there is the Tosèla di Primiero, that should be eaten in slices browned in alpine butter and served in together with polenta and Trentino Lucanica sausage.

#10

Go to the Siror Christmas Market

Don't miss out on the magical atmosphere of the Siror Christmas Market, the oldest Christmas market in Trentino! You can stock up on wooden trinkets, fabric decorations, and delicious treats from the wooden huts and picturesque shops.
