I weigh less than a milligram, which is another interesting fact. The antifreeze proteins I produce to withstand extreme cold are also quite interesting. They are similar to those found in Antarctic fish. Science is only beginning to understand their potential benefits. They are found in all glaciers, but only we, the glacier insects, know how best to use them.
Lately, though, I have started to feel a little hot. I no longer recognise certain places where I used to go to rest or simply to hibernate for a while. There used to be ice, but now there is none. I cannot explain it. Were people worried that I was getting too cold and tried to warm up the mountains? "Well no—don't!" .
The glaciers are retreating. If the water gets too hot, I won't survive. The species that used to stay in the valley are more likely to come up in search of coolness - like those who come from Rome or Milan to live in Trentino, because objectively, who wants to stay there and melt like ice cream, all surrounded by concrete? So I packed my bags and went up, along with all my friends - bacteria, larvae, insects, spiders and other little creatures that inhabit the glaciers. It's a shame, though, that mountains end at a point and you can't go any higher. Summit trap—that’s what they call it. Quite a catch! It was in the footnotes of the global warming brochure, they didn't let me read those clauses. They didn't consult me before they started overheating the planet that is also my home.
