The Doss del Sabion tour is very rewarding, especially because of the incredible views from the peak, ranging from the Brenta Dolomites to the Presanella Group and including the green Val Rendena. The ski-lifts that whisk you up to “Prà Rodont” in next to no time certainly help reduce the difficulty of this trek; but, despite this, the trails are sparsely frequented and, therefore, even more suggestive. The upper reaches of the tour are even more evocative and offer some really unique breathtaking views.

Turn-by-turn directions

From Pinzolo take the ski-lift to the intermediate station of Prà Rodont ( 1550 m ).

In the field between the lift station and the Prà Rodont Bar & Restaurant take the clearly marked trail No. 307, which climbs uphill for a short stretch on the ski slope.

The trail quickly enters the wood. Pass by the sign indicating the beginning of trail No. 357b “Tartarotti” (see the picture gallery) and follow the trail that runs obliquely uphill towards the left (avoid any forks in the trail that lead into the wood).

Continue along trail No. 357 for about ¾ of an hour to Malga Bandalors ( 1630 m ) (see the picture gallery), where there’s a fountain with deliciously fresh water. The pastures here are very suggestive and offer some beautiful views over the Presanella Group [from here you can take an alternative route/short cut climbing directly up on the left along the lane/trail No. 307 towards Passo Bregn da L’Ors ( 1845 m ) to avoid passing by Malga Movlina].

From the mountain dairy continue along the flat dirt lane. After about 200 m you cross a small ford, you leave the forest lane and join the trail signposted for “Malga Movlina” (see the picture gallery) . This is not a SAT marked trail. Follow it, but careful not to take any right-hand turnings leading into the wood. Keep to the left-hand trail, which leads to the Movlina meadows and the Movlina mountain dairy (1785 m), another beautiful scenic view (see the picture gallery) .

From the mountain dairy follow the lane on flat ground marked as trail No. 354, which leads to “Passo del Gotro” near the Casetta della Pace (see the picture gallery).

Continue along trail No./mule track 354 in the direction of the Passo Bregn da L’Ors, at 1845 m (this place is also called “Madonnina”, due to the presence of a small wayside shrine with a statue).

From the pass continue north along trail No. 357 (signposted Malga Cioca, Doss del Sabion) (see the picture gallery) . After a short while you reach the east ridge of the Doss, where there’s a Nordic Walking information board, with a little signpost pointing to Doss del Sabion on the left. From here you can climb on the left along the trail leading to the ridge, or continue straight ahead on the mid-slope trail (gps trail). We continue straight ahead on the trail that crosses a rather steep slope, with a beautiful view of Lake Valagola below (see the picture gallery) .

You come to a signposted fork, where you take the left continuing along trail No. 357 in the direction of Doss del Sabion, at 2101 m, an ideal place for a short rest and to enjoy the breathtaking 360°view.

From the peak take the short downhill lane on the “Doss del Sabion” ski piste, following trail No. 357b with the directions to “Zapel, Malga Cioca, Pinzolo”. At the point where the trail descends sharply to the left continue straight ahead towards the north, still following trail No. 357b towards “Zapel, Malga Cioca, Pinzolo”, on the north ridge (see the picture gallery) to the “Zona Zapel” ski pistes.

Follow the piste to the north, along the signposted trail No. 357 “Malga Cioca” and then descend via the well-beaten track on the piste, being careful not to follow it all the way, but to take trail No. 357, which enters the wood on the left.

Getting there

Take the “SS239 della Val Rendena” national road northwards (Madonna di Campiglio) up to Pinzolo, where you can park in the large car park of the Pinzolo Cableway station, on the edge of the village.

There are many car spaces.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike
