#DOLOMITESVIVES: live the Dolomites in a new, more sustainable way

Between 5 July and the end of August, for nine Wednesdays, Passo Sella will be accessible in a sustainable way between 9 am and 4 pm. The Passo will be open to cyclists and pedestrians, in addition to public transport vehicles and electrical vehicles. In the spirit of the #Dolomitesvives motto, during these days there will be a programme of musical events, meetings, gastronomical tours among the mountain huts and excursions with the Alpine guides to discover the countryside of the Dolomites.

The goal is to spread a different way of experiencing the Dolomite passes: a more responsible, eco-friendly and sustainable way, in order to further appreciate the beauty of the landscape of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the International Year of Sustainable Tourism proclaimed by the United Nations, a first and important signal has just been provided, in summer 2017, by the autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano who jointly promote the #Dolomitesvives project.

Starting from 5 July, and for the nine Wednesdays that follow, from 9 am to 4 pm, access to Passo Sella, from the side of the Val di Fassa and of the Val Gardena - Val Badia, will be reserved exclusively for pedestrians, bicycles, local public transport vehicles and electrical cars.

During these days, road access to Passo Sella will be closed at the intersection for Passo Pordoi on the Val di Fassa side, and for Plan de Gralba on the Val Gardena side.
The public transport service, on these days, will be reinforced to ensure closer departures towards the pass from both sides. To access the Dolomite pass, in addition to public transport, users will also be encouraged to use hiking trails and lifts.

Those who will climb to Passo Sella on these days of "sustainable opening", in addition to enjoying - in complete tranquility - the landscapes and views of Sella, Sassolungo, Catinaccio, Puez and Marmolada, will also be able to participate in a series of events organised in the area surrounding the pass, by the three Dolomite areas involved in the project - APT of the Val di Fassa, the Val Gardena Marketing Consortium, and the Alta Badia Tourism Consortium - and coordinated by Trentino Marketing and IDM Alto Adige - Südtirol.

In particular, in the morning, it will be possible to participate in a guided excursion lasting a couple of hours, together with the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, experts from the MUSE in Trento, Alpine Guides, and Middle-Mountain Guides of the Fassa, Gardena and Badia valleys. An itinerary that will offer an interpretation of the geological landscape of the Dolomites, through the illustration of the main evolutionary stages in the territory.

Following these excursions, in the natural arena on the pass musical events, shows, and meetings will be held, while six mountain huts in the area will host the event dedicated to the Dolomite flavours: tourists will discover the food excellence of both territories thanks to the recipes of local Michelin-starred chefs.

The first of these events is planned for Wednesday 5 July, and the protagonist will be mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who has always been a spokesperson for sustainable mountain tourism, and among the first to support the candidacy of the Dolomites to become a UNESCO world heritage site.
