Trento by night

The itinerary will take in the city's most important monuments, transformed by the magic of night light. The guide will head towards Via Manci to admire the palaces on what was once called Via Lunga; we will immerse ourselves in the nightlife of the café-concert that once enlivened Trentino summer evenings, now disappeared, until we reach the Cantone where, since the Middle Ages, the citizens would gather to hear the edicts of the town criers and where travellers would arrive from the north, along Via Imperiale and enter the Contrada Tedesca, also the subject of the visit. Here, then, is Piazza della Mostra, almost at the end of the Via Lunga, with the imposing bulk of the Castello del Buonconsiglio. Trento by night will show us the transformations of the city from antiquity to the present day the square in front of the Castle was reopened to the public a year ago after major renovation work on the urban environment in a sustainable key. It is a privileged place to admire the façade of Buonconsiglio Castle, consisting of three buildings, evidence of the multiple building phases of the manor built a good eight centuries ago. The tour will continue towards Via San Pietro, passing through the passageways between the houses and considering the recent history of the city, which in the 1980s and 1990s saw the conservative restoration of entire neighbourhoods in the historic centre and the construction of public housing in the heart of the city. The tour will also consider the essential architecture built in the Art Deco period, the Galleria dei Partigiani and Piazza Cesare Battista, the contemporary rear façade of the Teatro Sociale, and then through the heart of the city, lingering over the most important stone ornaments, to reach Via Belenzani, the old Via Larga; we will look at Palazzo Thun, the current town hall, and along the same street the old town hall with its statues on the top, to reach Piazza del Duomo, the most beautiful square in the city, with its nocturnal Neptune fountain, Palazzo Pretorio, the Civic Tower and the exterior of the cathedral with its stone decorations, whose symbolism spoke to the people of Trento. We will also take a look at Via Verdi and the Trento University, to continue south of the cathedral and read together with the visitors the rich Romanesque symbolism of the cathedral apses. To keep with the medieval theme, we will go as far as the nearby Via Santa Trinità to see some iconic examples of tower houses, still standing despite modern superfetations. The tour will continue to Palazzo Roccabruna, a fine example of a 16th-century palace, and to the Palazzo delle Poste, transformed from a Renaissance palace, to an industrial complex, to an austere Austrian post office building and finally, to a design by Mazzoni, into an Italian post office building, now in need of conservation work. The tour will end in Piazza del Duomo
