Performance of the Folk Group of Canazei
The Folk Group of Canazei performs typical choreographies of the Ladin and South Tyrolean traditions, accompanied by the cheerful notes of the accordion
The show opens with a meaningful gesture: the seven-coloured flag waves proudly, symbolising the seven municipalities of Val di Fassa and the strong sense of belonging that unites the Ladin community. This is followed by group and couple dances, which use body and rhythm to tell stories of ancient rituals, peasant festivals and gestures handed down from generation to generation. The traditional costumes, worn with pride by men and women, are an explosion of colours, refined details and decorations rich in history. Once upon a time, these steps were learned during the winter months, around the fire, when work in the fields stopped and families gathered in the stues (living rooms). It was during Carnival, the only time of true carefree joy for farmers, that dancing became an expression of collective joy, a break from daily toil and a celebration of life. The first records of these dances date back to the 1920s. However, it was after the Second World War that a new awareness emerged: the need to preserve and protect local traditions. This led to the formation of the first folk groups, including the one in Canazei, founded in 1974 and still active today, an ambassador for the roots of the Fassa Valley in Italy and abroad. Each performance is an act of love for their homeland: Val di Fassa dances, tells its story and recognises itself in its most authentic memory.
