La batoles de Ciampedèl
Old Ladin folk traditions are revived in Campitello in the two days leading up to Easter
In accordance with Christian ritual, during the Maundy Thursday service, the church bells toll for the last time. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday, no bells toll in the village to honour Christ's death in silence, until Easter Sunday. To draw people to the religious services, young people parade with "batoles" through the streets of Campitello at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m., the Ave Maria hours, starting from the square "Piaz Veie". The "batoles" are wooden instruments, made by local carpenters or inherited from grandparents, consisting of a plank, hammer and clapper. The sound produced is mournful and rhythmic and recalls the blows that Jesus received from his crucifiers.
