Beautiful trekking that connects the Larici, Portule, and Dodici peaks following the traces of the Great War
A 35 km excursion along the Peaks of Valsugana on the border between Trentino and Veneto. It connects the four main summits: Cima Larici at 2038 m, Portule at 2308 m, Cima Dodici at 2336 m (the highest of the chain), and Ortigara at 2106 m. The only real difficulty is the length of the itinerary. The trekking follows the chain of peaks that divides the Valsugana to the north from the Plateau of the Seven Municipalities to the south. During the Great War, these mountains were considered strategic and were the scene of terrible massacres, culminating with the Battle of Ortigara in June 1917, in which 30,000 soldiers fell. The immense and desolate karst plateau south of Mount Ortigara and Cima 12, characterized by an endless stretch of small valleys, hills, ridges, ravines, dolines, mountains, and pine thickets, is rich in war relics. Trenches, fortifications, remains of barracks, tunnels, boundary stones, roads, and military cemeteries can be seen everywhere.
