Map / The Viote del Bondone with your snowshoes

If you’re stretched for time but you don’t want to miss out on a charming trek across the snow, the highlands of the Viote are the perfect place for you.

The upland of the Viote is a kind of flat basin at the feet of the “Tre Cime” (Three Peaks) of Bondone and is easily reached both from Trento and the valley of Cavedine.

To the west these uplands are bordered by a long crest known as “La Rosta” which can be reached after an easy uphill trek and, although this route is suitable for all, it truly offers a spectacular view.

Author’s recommendation

Instead of returning along the same route you came, the GPS track we propose here allows you to take a downhill shortcut.

Safety information

Make sure you inform the instructors at the Viote Cross-Country Skiing Centre where you’re going before you leave.

Remember, snowpack stability is subject to sudden and unforeseeable changes and shifts. Always check the local avalanche bulletin (www.meteotrentino.it or any other service that suits your needs) before departure and make sure you gather all possible information concerning current conditions from the local Mountain Guides (www.dolomitiavventura.it).

GPS tracks are merely indicative of the more standard routes but must not be followed blindly without first checking current slope and terrain conditions.

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

Equipment

For all snowshoe treks, suitable apparel is strongly recommended. Temperatures can dip quickly and so garments should be warm and also be suitable for snowy conditions (such as waterproof Gore-Tex jackets). Furthermore, every group member should pack gloves, a cap, sun glasses and sun cream.

It’s also important to bear in mind that tight-fitting or insufficiently waterproof footwear can lead to frostbite.

We also strongly recommend that all members of the group pack an avalanche rescue kit consisting of avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel (this is also available for rent).

Ski poles can also come in quite useful and are therefore recommended.

Turn-by-turn directions

You take off in a south/south-west direction along trail no. SAT 607 which skirts the bog until you reach the Malga Fragari farmstead. From here you take the path up along the Val d’Eva until you reach the Bocca di Vaiona at an elevation of 1,697 m a.s.l..

From here, turn right (north) along the crest following trail no. SAT 618 which leads right up to the highest point of “La Rosta”.

For your return trip, you can always take a shortcut by retracing your steps as far as the Val d’Eva and then cutting directly east through the woods until you emerge onto the open meadows below (see GPS track).
