Peace Trail: from Rifugio Contrin to Malga Ciapela

The Peace Trail is a journey through memory. A route crossing Trentino, from Tonale to Marmolada, through the places of the White War. In the last stage, you will be accompanied by the Queen of the Dolomites, starting from Contrin to Malga Ciapela.

The millennial glacier of the Marmolada, the largest of the Dolomites, before being remembered for the atrocious events of the First World War and the legendary "Ice City", is a natural "monument", declared a World Heritage Site in 2009. Perennial snow, potholes carved by water, pale dolomitic limestone rocks have fascinated climbers, explorers, and alpine guides since the 1800s, including the Austrian Paul Grohmann. However, the conquest of the south face is attributed to a woman, the fearless English climber Beatrice Tomasson who on July 1, 1901, reached the 3343 m of Punta Penia, after twelve hours of climbing. Skiing appeared right here in 1910, for military purposes. The winter ascent to the ice ridge of the Queen soon became the most famous in the Dolomites. In 1935, along the "Bellunese" track, the first giant slalom race of the entire Alpine arc was organized. In the post-war period, the giant was included among the events of the Winter Olympic Games, bringing fame to the Marmolada and Canazei. In 1946 the only chairlift in Italy reaching Pian dei Fiacconi was built, while in 1952 the Fedaia dam was completed, reshaping the lake.
