Passo Tonale - Forte Mero

Simple excursion on a dirt road to Forte Mero, a former Austro-Hungarian fortification from the First World War at Passo del Tonale.

Forte Mero is an Austrian fort built to defend the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The fort was built between 1911 and 1913 and represented the connection between Forte Zaccarana and Forte Presanella. It was a medium-sized fortification, constructed with compressed concrete and iron beams. This excursion, suitable for everyone, includes going out and back on the same road and starts from the historic San Bartolomeo Hospice at nearly 2000 meters altitude. The elevation difference is about 150 meters, and the outward trip is slightly downhill. Upon arriving at the fort you continue for a few more minutes to reach a former military village called the Strino barracks.
