On the path of the ancient wandering shepherds

Valongia, together with Tamion, is one of the most characteristic villages of the Ladin tradition. It preserves intact the architecture of the houses and the organization of the spaces.

The first huts around Vigo were built during the Middle Ages. They served as shelter and hostel for shepherds and flocks. Only in 1750, when the church of San Giovanni Nepomuceno was built in the fraction of Valongia, did a stable settlement arise. Until 1914, Valongia was the endpoint of the popular procession that started from Nova Levante, just beyond the Passo Carezza border. Nova Levante, although belonging to South Tyrol, also maintained the Ladin language and traditions brought by the farmers from Val di Fassa who came there for grazing. A custom that later disappeared with the start of the Great War conflict.

Tamion also has preserved many of the old stables, currently restored. It is interesting to read, within its spaces, the social and civil geography of a village that has always enjoyed one of the most envied urban views in the valley.
