Monte Zugna

Short and easy route that develops from the Coni Zugna refuge to the summit of the mountain.

We are on the slopes of Monte Zugna, a very panoramic peak overlooking Rovereto, Vallagarina, Vallarsa, and Pasubio. For its strategic importance, it was the scene of fierce clashes during the Great War. The war works from that period are still clearly visible today, and this route allows you to visit the artifacts, fortifications, and trenches. The Monte Zugna Refuge is very beautiful and welcoming, serving as the starting point of the hike; the nearby Astronomical Observatory is of great interest.

The itinerary follows the military mule track crossing the ruins of barracks (altitude 1775m) and other service buildings built by the Austro-Hungarian army in anticipation of the fortress construction that was to be excavated beneath the mountain's summit. Most striking is the large stone impluvium occupying a good part of the steep slope at the edge of the plateau, covering nearly 600 square meters. Once at the summit, the panorama extends 360 degrees from Pasubio, the Little Dolomites, Lessinia, Monte Vignola, and Altissimo above the Adige valley, and further west to the summit of Carè Alto and the Brenta Dolomites group, reaching as far as the Palon summit of Bondone and the city of Trento.
