In the footsteps of the "Friars" of the Val Duron
A journey to the origins of the Dolomites, when they were submerged in a tropical marine environment, through carbonate rocks that are fossil deposits of shells, corals, and algae.
This walk, which starts from Campitello and crosses the Val Duron to reach Baita Lino Brach Rifugio, famous for its unmissable polenta, is a peaceful excursion perfect for any season. The colours that adorn the Sassopiatto and Catinaccio, the forests, meadows, and rocks change with the seasons. Change your clothing and equipment. What remains intact and preserved is the unique geological and natural heritage that distinguishes this valley. Val Duron preserves tropical fossils embedded in rocks, minerals such as rose quartz, and protects endangered plant and animal species like the rock ptarmigan, black grouse, hazel grouse, and capercaillie. And it is dotted with steadfast guardians, the "Friars" - rounded rocks shaped by selective erosion. The weather events across different geological eras have acted on them in unique ways, creating astonishing shapes.
