13 - Ascent to the Fort
Forte Sommo alto is the smallest Austrian fort of the fortified belt of the Altipiani, an intermediate structure located between Forte Cherle and Forte Dosso delle Somme. From its roof, there is a wide panorama over the underlying Val Orsara and towards the heights of Passo Coe, Plaut, Pioverna, and Monte Maggio. About 700 m from the fort is the Rifugio Stella d'Italia, open on weekends and every day in July and August. <p> </p>
The reasons that may lead you to choose this hike can be historical interest, as the fort is an interesting testimony of the first great world conflict fought in this sector of the Austro-Italian front, scenic and panoramic interest, and naturalistic interest. The hike, which is also accessible to families with children over 8 years old, takes place on the former military road that connected the Fort to Passo del Sommo, mostly surrounded by a thick forest cover (red firs).
