Ladin Carnival of Campitello
An unmissable festival in the square of Campitello, a dive into the traditions of Val di Fassa, where every mask tells a story and every laugh becomes a precious memory
Carnival in Val di Fassa is an explosion of colour, tradition and fun, with numerous events bringing life to the squares of the valley’s villages. However, the most eagerly awaited event, attracting a large audience of both locals and tourists every year, is undoubtedly the grand parade in Campitello, held on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. The event begins in the square "Piaz de Ciampedel" with the spectacular entrance of the "Grop de la Mescrès de Ciampedèl", the famous group of traditional masked figures that embody the spirit of the Ladin Carnival. Leading the procession are "Laché", "Bufon" and "Marascons", iconic characters of local folklore, dressed in elaborately decorated costumes, unique to the entire Alpine region. Following them, a long and lively parade of masked revellers and allegorical floats winds through the streets of the town centre, filling the air with music, laughter and festive cheer. The main protagonists of the festival wear the traditional "facères da bel e da burt", extraordinary wooden masks hand-carved by skilled local artisans. Some depict harmonious and smiling faces, while others display grotesque and exaggerated expressions, each telling a story and preserving the rich cultural heritage of Val di Fassa.
This year’s celebration is even more special: to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ladin Cultural Institute, the parade will welcome two extraordinary guests, Jandeluvio and Catertempora. These two enigmatic figures, usually kept within the museum, will come to life for one day only, offering spectators a rare and magical glimpse into the world of Ladin legend and folklore.
This is not just a spectacle to admire from the sidelines, but an immersive experience to be enjoyed first-hand. With improvised sketches, playful antics and Ladin word games, the audience will be swept up in the infectious energy of the Carnival. And no celebration would be complete without delicious local delicacies: the mouth-watering aromas of sizzling sausages, golden crispy "fortae" (traditional fried pastries), and freshly made apple fritters will fill the streets, tempting festival-goers at every turn.
