Annamaria Gelmi | The instability of the limit

In the spaces of the Galleria Civica in Trento, the Mart is dedicating an exhibition to Trentino artist Annamaria Gelmi, whose works stand out for their extreme simplicity and cleanliness. Throughout her long career, Gelmi has participated in important exhibitions in Italy and abroad, attracting the attention of well-known art critics. The exhibition is a true homage that traces the artist's entire career.
Born in Trento in 1943, she trained at the Istituto d’Arte in Trento, the Accademia di Brera in Milan and the Accademia di Venezia in Venice. She held her first exhibition in Bolzano in 1968: at this time, she began working with materials such as Plexiglas, methacrylate and other plastics. The result is works that play with transparency and space, composed of large sheets of acetate and elementary geometric shapes.
In the early 1980s, she moved away from black-and-white minimalism to embrace colour: the works in this phase are characterised by memories of history and fragments of classical architecture (colonnades, pediments, labyrinths), all drawn on Japanese paper.
In the 1990s, architectural elements became signs, symbolic reminders. Colour became stronger and induced the perception of space as a mental condition in which a different, ambiguous and absolute vision could arise. During this period, the artist created sculptures/installations in iron, stone and brass, and published the book SKY LINE, which was presented at the 46th International Venice Biennale.
The iron works and large installations belong to the last two decades, marked by numerous notable exhibitions.
