One of Italy’s largest amphitheatres, and the most famous monument in Verona
It was built by the Romans some time in the mid-1st century AD, and played host to a variety of spectacles: fights between gladiators and hunts for ferocious, exotic animals. Its oval form was designed to hold huge numbers of spectators (around 30,000) while ensuring sufficient space for the games. It was built outside the walls of the Roman city to better accommodate the massive influx of spectators and prevent crowding within the urban area.
