Wellness Hike: The Fortress of San Martino
Embark on a hike to the archaeological site at Monte San Martino di Lundo, one of the Alps' most extensive and awe-inspiring fortified structures, dating back to the 5th/6th century AD. Situated on a rocky ledge, it offers commanding views of the entire Comano Valley. This tour is accessible to all, making it a must-do for history buffs and mystery seekers alike. The San Martino site boasts deep historical roots, emerging in the aftermath of the Roman Empire's fall. This era saw the region become a contested battleground among Goths, Franks, and Byzantines, each vying for territorial dominance. The fortress initially served to safeguard the vital north-south passage to Lake Garda and the Po Plain. Over time, a quaint church was constructed, which remained a place of pilgrimage for centuries, long after the military outpost had dwindled in significance and was gradually forsaken. By the 1940s, the small church, too, was forgotten, and nature quickly enveloped the site in a thick blanket of greenery. Yet, the rediscovery of San Martino in 1998 marked the beginning of archaeological excavations that have since unveiled the site's rich complexity.
