“Festung Trento” the fortified Austro-Hungarian belt

Trento: 7-9 and 21-23/6 | 4-6 and 18-20/10

Festung Trento, a journey through history and nature to discover the Fortress of Trento, a system of fortifications built in different times, up to the Great War, to protect the city. The first day is spent on the Sorasass between walkways and observation posts, the second day will take you from the Viote basin (with the old barracks still there) to Cornetto; the third day is devoted to Monte Argentario, an ancient mining place.

Bivacco Lagoscuro, the Hippopotamus, the Cavento shelter

Adamello: from 20/6 to 20/9, Thu-Sat

A historical-environmental crossing of the Adamello, from North to South, along the White War front, from Passo del Tonale to Rifugio Carè Alto. At Cresta Croce there is still the giant cannon (called the Hippopotamus) dragged high up by the Alpini. On the Corno di Cavento, in turn, the ice has preserved the Austrians stations in the tunnel. You sleep at the Mandron and Caduti dell’Adamello huts.

Laghi del Lagorai

From Cermis to Sadole and Cima Cauriol, testimonies from the front line

Lagorai: from June to October

From Alpe Cermis to Predazzo, a crossing of the northern slopes of Lagorai, defended by Austria during the Great War. The route passes through Cima Cauriol, conquered by the Alpini in 1916, and arrives in Valmaggiore, among the most prized forests in Trentino, where the red resonance spruce grows, famous for its musical properties. Overnight stays at Malga Sadole and Malga Valmaggiore.

Via ferratas and military works around the Lake

Garda Trentino: from April to October, Mon-Wed

A first taste of the vertical dimension (on the Rio Salagoni and Monte Colodri ferratas); then, on the second day, you tackle the Susatti ferrata, with fantastic views of Lake Garda, among fortified rocks (Ponale). The third day is devoted to Cima Pichea, after a night spent at Rifugio Pernici and the exploration of dormitories and of the military tunnel dedicated to Captain Riccabona.

From Val di Fumo to the White War locations on the Adamello

Adamello: 1-3 July

Crossing of the Adamello from south to north along the old White War front. You start from the green and wild Val di Fumo to reach the Caduti dell’Adamello hut, at the edge of the glacier. The intermediate stop is at Rifugio Carè Alto, where there are still many remains of the conflict, and at Cresta Croce, where the Alpini carried a huge cannon, the Hippopotamus, still there at high altitude.

Ortigara and the forts of the Altopiano di Lavarone

On the border between Veneto and Trentino: 24-26 June

A trek from Valsugana to the plateaus in the territory of Vicenza (and back), through the forts and barren slopes on the border between Trentino and Veneto, where the marks left by the bombings blend in with the depressions in the ground. Departure and arrival in Val di Sella through Monte Ortigara, known as the “Calvary of the Alpini”. Night stays at Rifugio Cecchin and Malga Larici, with final visit to the Artesella outdoor exhibition.
