Cimbrian legends, the soul of a community

Understanding and knowing who lives in a place

Luserna (Lusern in Cimbrian) stands on a large mountain pasture: a handful of houses, a church, and around terraces, deep valleys, gorges and streams. Its inhabitants, now just over 250, speak Cimbrian, a language of Bavarian origin.

Luserna, is the town of stories. Very ancient stories from very distant times are told here. The ravine in the rock, the gurgling stream, the trail to the woods, the environment surrounding the town... everything tells and restores the meaning and origin of Cimbrian legends.

The desire to seek something else, beyond peaks and summits, is met in Luserna more than in other towns in Trentino. You can really get to know the Cimbrian community, understand how they were, how they lived and how they still live today.

In the Cimbrian stories the characters themselves are great revealers. You can find them along the Sentiero cimbro dell’Immaginario (Cimbrian Path of the Imaginary). But it’s better to get some information before meeting our caracters...

Bolkhent in balt vo Lusérn - Welcome to the Luserna woods

Dar Sambinèlo: the creature of the forest

Dar Sambinèlo is a strange little man who mysteriously managed to get people who glimpsed him in the darkness of the forest to follow him, even against their will, and with the help of the fog, he manages to make them lose their way, even if they intimately know every corner of the forest, as the mushroom hunters of the village do. Many swear that they have met him at least once.

The Brava Part: the witch in the Rio Cavallo Valley

Brava Part is a witch who embodies ancestral fears. Her song, somewhere between a scream and a croak, was a shrill, blood-curdling sound. As legend has it, the mere mention of her presence was enough to make children return home before sunset.

Tüsele Marüsele: the orphan of Luserna

Tüsele Marüsele is a nice and intelligent girl. She lives in Luserna all alone, without her mom and dad, but she is not afraid because everyone in town loves her. There are those who worry about giving her food and drink, clothes to cover herself with and a dry place to sleep when snow comes. In return she gives a serene smile and keeps everyone’s stories in her memory.

Frau Pèrtega: the guardian of life

In Luserna, children were never born under cabbages, the stork never brought them. In fact, it was the comàre, the midwife tasked by parents to bring them a child, who went to the cave of Frau Pèrtega. To

this day in Luserna, when thunder is heard coming from the east of the town, where the Frau Pèrtega cave is located, the elderly interpret this natural phenomenon as an announcement of a future birth.

If you want to meet them…
