Hut-to-hut hiking
Autumn in the mountains is so atmospheric - valleys, passes, and cliffs are quiet, only interrupted by marmot whistles, deer calls, cuckoos, the sound of the wind or a stone rolling down a scree. Walking trails to alpine huts, many of which remain open - especially on weekends - until late October, are tranquil, silent and inviting.

This stunning season offers visitors the chance to witness sunrises and sunsets that transform rocks and grassy meadows with vibrant hues. A morning walk, bathed in warm light and crisp air, invigorates the senses.

Autumn Mountain Lifts: Reaching New Heights
Part of the mountain charm is being able to reach higher altitudes and enjoy panoramic views of the peaks and autumn foliage from incredible vantage points. Conveniently, many lifts in Trentino remain open through the end of September/ mid-October. Information about lift openings in autumn can be found here.

Many of Trentino’s 140 alpine huts extend their opening into autumn too. There is something magical about each hut, especially the hosts and their stories. People who, with endless passion, have always had a special relationship with the mountain territory. They instinctively ‘read’ the weather, clouds and sky and can offer expert advice on suitable trails.

The difficulty of the routes to these huts varies. Some require many hours of hiking and significant elevation gain, while others are simple walks, made easier by lift access. The important thing is always to start well-informed about your route and be equipped with the  appropriate equipment. With preparation and some training, reaching the hut is such a rewarding experience - the perfect sanctuary after a day’s trekking.

Dolomiti Trek-King in autumn: From Catinaccio to Sassolungo
The Dolomites of Fassa rise against a turquoise sky, complemented by golden larches, dark green pines and the purples of beech, ash, and birch. As nature slows down and prepares for winter, autumn in the mountains is a season to cherish, offering some of the most enchanting days of the year.

The exhilarating Dolomiti Trek-King is a 6-stage trekking route across the trails of Val di Fassa, moving from hut to hut on a scenic alpine itinerary. From any point, it is possible to descend to the valley and easily return to the starting point.

Named after the legendary King Laurin, the Dolomiti Trek-King offers a fairytale-like encounter. Here, a leisurely walk evokes intense emotions, sensations and sounds, transporting you far from everyday life. It's a truly unique and unmissable experience.

The classic route starts around the Marmolada, continues through Passo Sella and finally traverses the Catinaccio group from north to south in the last two stages. The 3-day (3-night) holiday package includes:

●     3 self-guided trekking tours of moderate difficulty

●     1 overnight stay in a hotel (last night) in a double room with half board

●     2 overnight stays in mountain huts in shared rooms with half board

●     Cotton sleeping bag sheets for hut stays

●     Trail map

Valid from September 14 to October 19, 2025, starting at €329 per person.

Dolomites in autumn: Authentic experiences in Val di Fassa
Also in Val di Fassa, during the most colourful and tranquil period of the year, ‘Dolomiti d’Autunno’ nurtures both body and mind. It's a soothing, relaxing journey, where you can learn from nature and improve your general wellbeing.

From September 20 to October 19, there will be a rich program of activities promoting mental wellbeing - a trend recognised by the Global Wellness Institute. Autumn in the mountains offers visitors unique experiences such as thematic weekends which combine trekking and biking for small groups eager to explore the territory's charms. Each activity incorporates holistic practices, occasional survival skills and tastings of local valley products.

From October 13 to November 9, daily sessions of yoga, pilates, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, outdoor meditation, mindfulness with Tibetan bowls and forest bathing are available. These take place outdoors or in dedicated spaces of hotels and local facilities, such as the Ladin Cultural Institute, where meditation is practiced in historic buildings with fine wooden furnishings.

‘Dolomiti d’Autunno’ in San Martino di Castrozza and Primiero
A highlight of this program is the Primiero Slow Tour. The route passes through lower-altitude trails, forests and mountain meadows at the foot of the Pale di San Martino and Vette Feltrine, which light up with warm seasonal colours.

Starting from Fiera di Primiero, it visits beautiful locations such as Val Canali, Passo Cereda, Caltena, the meadows of San Giovanni, Lago della Noana and the Prati della Vederna, before returning to the valley floor of Primiero. This five-stage journey involves overnight stays in huts and offers breathtaking views of the Dolomites, forests, and alpine meadows. Available until October 12 and then on weekends from Friday to Sunday upon request until October 26. More information on the Primiero Slow Tour here.

The Peace Trail
The Sentiero della Pace (Peace Trail) is an impressive 500-kilometer mountain route in Trentino, stretching from Passo del Tonale to Marmolada. This extensive trail is divided into seven sections and approximately 35 stages, requiring at least a month to complete. The trail serves to preserve history, highlighting sites, trenches, fortifications and other remnants from World War I. It also showcases Trentino’s natural landscapes, including forests, pastures, flowered plateaus, ridges and slopes - all accessible along well-marked and safe trails.

Further information on the Peace trail here.

Safety in the Mountains
When planning a high-altitude hike, careful planning is key, especially as daylight hours diminish. Assess your fitness levels thoroughly and plan your route accordingly. For beginners or technically challenging trails, always consult a certified mountain or trekking guide. Contact the local hut in advance to check trail conditions and weather forecasts. Ensure you have appropriate clothing and equipment, including technical gear for early-morning excursions when you may encounter icy slopes.
