Go and discover the ancient rural hamlets of the “Banale”, and climb up to the picturesque Rifugio Alpenrose.

Author’s recommendation

Don’t miss the weekend at the end of October, when the hamlets of San Lorenzo - one of the most beautiful Villages in Italy - come to life with festivals, markets, games for kids, and convivial events in the courtyards and alleys. This is the “Festa della Ciuiga”, not to be missed.

Please note that the practicability of the itineraries in a mountain environment is strictly linked to the contingent conditions and is therefore influenced by natural phenomena, environmental changes and weather conditions. For this reason, the information contained in this page may have changed. Before leaving for a tour, make sure the path you will approach is still accessible by contacting the owner of the mountain hut, the alpine guides or the visitor centres of the nature parks, the info offices of the local tourist board.

In case of wet/dew on the sloped paving, in particular, it can be rather slippery and insidious (telescopic hiking sticks are useful).

Turn-by-turn directions

From San Lorenzo in Banale, you follow the paved road in Val Ambiez direction.

You cross the beautiful hamlet of Senaso, and continue in the direction of Val Ambiez (“Via per la Val Ambiez”) travelling about 400 m on the almost flat paved road.

In “La Cros” locality you reach a fork where you turn right, following the “Località Le Mase” road, following the directions for trail 349B (GB Itinerario Garda-Brenta).

You continue along the paved road and ignore the turn-off to the right. You follow the directions for the “Le Mase Basse - Val Ambiez” Route. Ignoring other turnings, you continue along the road that climbs uphill and becomes a gravel mule track. The slope becomes quite steep.

You reach another fork at an altitude of about 900 m. You now avoid following the directions for the “Le Mase Basse - Val Ambiez” Route, and instead turn right onto a forest road, travelling uphill and passing a pretty mountain home on an ample meadow.

You climb along the road, still on a steep slope. The road (still marked white and red, 349B) soon turns into a narrower path. You climb some more, following directions for “Le Mase Alte”.

In this way, you reach an elevation of 1160 m, and come to a crossroads at “Le Mase” (sign by the Parco Adamello Brenta).

Here, you continue straight, following the sign for Rifugio Alpenrose. The trail continues level and on a slight downhill slope until you reach the mountain hat at 1070 m asl.

From the mountain hut, you go down the paved road towards San Lorenzo in Banale. Just below the “Larì” Parking Area, you must be careful to leave the paved road and take (Warning! There are no signs here) the little dirt and then gravel road that goes down into the forest.

Following the “Sentiero Senaso - Larì” route backwards, you go down into the vegetation, occasionally crossing a paved road the comes from the town. You come to a fork with a capital on the right (Capitello di S. Antonio). Here you turn right and continue until you reach a paved road, which you follow briefly downhill, to a bend in the road in “Duch” locality.

Now, you abandon the paved road and walk down the path on the right, which crosses the meadows and returns to Senaso, and therefore the starting point.
