This walk takes place inside the gorge of Sottosassa (Val Travignolo), only a short distance away from   Predazzo. This narrow valley was hollowed out of porphyry rock by the Travignolo Torrent over the course of millennia, a process which has led to the formation of characteristic pools, dips and bulges. The very limpid water which flows through, down, or over such obstacles comes from springs high up in the peaks of the Lagorai range.

This walk is especially enjoyable during the warm season when the cool generated by the lush wood as well as by the waters of the torrent is even more welcome. Most of the walk takes place on a forest road, which makes it suitable even for families with children in pushchairs.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the car park, take the dirt road which climbs gently in an easterly direction. Follow the signs for trail 660. After crossing a nice stone bridge (Ponte Lizata), turn right and follow the signs for Sottosassa (trail 660). A small road leads into the Valle del Travignolo. It runs alongside the picturesque stream which has eroded the walls of this small gorge and it passes a series of small cascades and natural pools. The rock face on your left (known as ‘falesia di Sottosassa’) is used as a practice crag by rock climbers. Proceed along the small road making sure you always follow the signs for trail 660. You soon reach a spot where the road makes a sharp bend to the left and starts to climb rather steeply. You’re near Maso Andreola. If you have been pushing a pushchair, we recommend you make a U-turn here and retrace your steps because from now on, the going gets difficult and tiring; if not, proceed along the road to a fork where you can either take trail 660 or remain on the road (now marked 342). Either way, you come to Bellamonte (if you take the latter route, you walk past Malga Scofa to the eastern-most hamlets of Bellamonte).

Return to the starting place by the same route.

Getting there

Follow the SS48 (Val di Fiemme national road) up to Predazzo. Once there, follow the Passo Rolle road (SS50) for about 2 km until you see a large lay-by on your right often used for stacking timber. Turn right into the small road to Val Travignolo (signposted for a campsite). Drive past the campsite, cross a stone bridge and park your vehicle in the lay-by just beyond it.
