Looking at the rocky peaks of the Marmolada (Serauta) you will notice the large holes of the tunnels from World War I. You cannot help being surprised by their incredible height above the glacier... Why is that? This is an excellent starting point for interesting research.

Behind the Fedaia - Pian dei Fiacconi Cablecar station, you take SAT trail 606, which climbs the Eastern slopes of the Col de Bous. The trail initially winds its way between plates and ledges of dolomitic rock. After the first 200 m climb, the trail goes through screes, and climbs to the “Col de Bous” saddle, at 2438 m asl, where you can see the remains of World War I military structures.
Here, you encounter a fork. You continue along trail 606 in the direction of Pian dei Fiacconi, and ignore trail 619, which heads towards “Col de Le Baranchie”.
You walk uphill and continue, sticking to the path, in the direction of the uphill station of the Pian dei Fiacconi Cablecar. You climb some more until you reach Rifugio Ghiacciaio della Marmolada, which is located just above, in a south-easterly direction.
You return along the same route.
VARIATION
You can comfortably reach the mountain hut with the Fedaia - Pian dei Fiacconi Cablecar. From Pian dei FIacconi, you climb on foot, briefly, until you reach Rifugio Ghiacciaio della Marmolada, which is located just above, in a south-easterly direction.
Getting there
SS48 delle Dolomiti to Canazei. Then follow directions for Passo Fedaia until the Fedaia Dam wall. You leave your car at the parking area of the Fedaia - Pian dei Fiacconi cablecar.
